“High School Was a Great Time for Us”
Throughout their education, Gayland and Joy were instilled with admiration for several influential figures from their school days who left a lasting impression on them. Their biology teacher stood out as a “great motivator,” always available to guide students and help them succeed. Joy also connected with her band teacher, who was supportive and motivated students. These instructors, alongside the encouraging efforts of school administrators, shaped Gayland and Joy’s high school years and made a lasting impact on their lives.
Everything That Happens in the World Begins With a Teacher
The value that Gayland and Joy placed on education, and their personal connections with their teachers, formed a foundation of respect and admiration for the profession. Gayland has reflected on how teachers are central to student success, believing that no one, “not even an athlete,” could succeed without teachers. The fond memories of teachers who went above and beyond in supporting and motivating students would be foundational to Gayland’s desire to honor those who dedicate their lives to teaching. He specifically wanted to recognize educators who not only teach but also inspire students, foster positive learning environments, and make lasting contributions to the community.
After Joy’s sudden passing in 2012, Gayland began looking for meaningful ways to honor her memory and their shared belief about the importance of education. The inspiration for the Joy A. and Gayland P. Smith Teaching Award came from a friend, Dr. John Slater, who had established a similar award at his high school. Moved by the idea, Gayland pursued the creation of a teaching award to recognize outstanding educators who exemplified the qualities of motivation, inspiration, and community impact that he and Joy valued so deeply.
Honoring Those Who Go Above and Beyond
Ultimately, the Joy A. and Gayland P. Smith Teaching Award was established to celebrate those educators who make an extraordinary difference in the lives of students, much like the teachers who shaped Gayland and Joy’s own lives. By creating this award, Gayland sought to honor not only Joy’s memory but also the legacy of great teachers who are often unsung heroes in shaping the future.
