Baird Wins Minecraft Esport Tournament

Esports stands for Electronic sports, an organized game-based competition that involves critical thinking, communication, and strategizing. The Esports trend has become very widespread in recent years providing competitions and tournaments like traditional sports such as volleyball, basketball, and football.

Esports became important during the pandemic to keep students engaged in a safe environment. Minecraft Education is a game-based platform that builds students’ STEM skills while unleashing their creativity. Minecraft offers subject-specific lessons and an open canvas where students can create amazing things! Minecraft introduces students to coding, engineering, and chemistry among other career exploration opportunities.

Minecraft Education players enter a virtual world made of blocks that represent varied materials like grass, wood, stone, etc.

Students and teachers join the FUSD league at the beginning of the school year. Teams practice prior to matches which include six different practice build challenges. The teams then move on to the Playoffs. Using a complex rubric that scores creativity, collaboration, and the use of coding and engineering, the eight best teams move on to the Tournament.

Baird Elementary School has been the champion for the last two seasons. Baird competed against Figarden Elementary in 2023. Baird has also had the opportunity to compete against esports in South Africa and has taken the win two consecutive times.
