Manchester Gate has been recognized with two distinguished awards this school year. It was ranked as the fourth-best elementary school in California by U.S. News & World Report and received the National Blue Ribbon Schools award. As a Fresno Unified elementary school, Manchester Gate has earned these distinctions through its outstanding performance on state-mandated tests, its graduation rates, and its effectiveness in preparing students for high school.
Principal Janet Gengozian, at the helm for the past decade, learned of the school’s recognition when her cousin in Los Angeles shared the news from a U.S. News & World Report. Principal Gengozian attributes the success of Manchester Gate to her collaborative leadership style, involving her staff in decision-making and deferring to them when implementing initiatives. Serving the children brings her the greatest joy.
Surprisingly, Mrs. Gengozian was contacted by a group from South Korea called the Educational Broadcasting System, which expressed an interest in creating a documentary about Manchester Gate’s recognition as the fourth-best elementary school in California. Principal Gengozian was responsible for planning a grand school-wide celebration that took place in January, and she remains committed to highlighting the achievements of her students and staff.
Manchester Gate serves students from second through sixth grade, boasting a student body of 700. Notable accomplishments include a commendable 94% proficiency rate or higher in math, and an impressive 96% in reading. The school prides itself on a diverse demographic, with 79% of its population hailing from ethnic minority backgrounds. Despite a student-teacher ratio of 26:1, which is somewhat above the district average, the school remains committed to academic excellence.
Manchester Gate has notably also been acknowledged for achieving the highest student attendance within the Fresno Unified School District, adding another feather to its cap of accomplishments.
